UC survey shows money saving technology gaining traction

InformationWeek recently unveiled the results of their Unified Communications Survey, which polled more than 300 business technology pros about their Unified Communications (UC) plans and problems.

According to the results of the survey, UC solutions, such as video teleconferencing (VTC) systems, are seeing increased adoption. In fact, the percentage of respondents that said they implemented UC solutions in their workplaces increased from 30 percent to 36 percent since last year.

However, the results weren’t completely rosy for UC adoption. Of the respondents that did implement UC solutions in their organization, 65 percent of them rolled these solutions out to less than half of their users. The reasons why respondents were hesitant to embrace UC included not seeing a definitive business case or simply having higher priorities.

In today’s economic environment, it’s surprising to hear that IT professionals could have higher priorities than increasing their organization’s productivity while helping it to drastically cut costs. Especially in the public sector, where federal government agencies are struggling mightily to do more with less resources in light of ongoing budget issues.

It was this same need to increase productivity and decrease costs that led President Obama to spearhead his campaign to cut government waste. This mandate, which pushes agencies to embrace UC solutions such as VTC as an alternative to business travel, has already saved the federal government $17.6 billion in wasteful payments.

By embracing VTC, government agencies can eliminate expensive travel, increase productivity, embrace telework and otherwise cut costs. In fact, it’s been estimated that VTC could save the Department of Energy $15.7 million within a year. Thanks to VTC, NASA is projected to save $17 million and the IRS is expecting a 27% decrease in spending on travel expenses in the 2012 Fiscal Year.

However, for many agencies, the savings are a great incentive to look at VTC again, but the initial costs can be difficult on the budget. It’s for this reason that companies like Polycom are now offering the Federal Applications Programs. This program provides VTC equipment and solutions at discounted rates for the government, along with value-add services including specialized applications training, association memberships and access to custom content and features such as a green screen solutions.

In today’s difficult economic climate, advanced UC solutions, such as VTC, are the best way to enable government agencies to do more with less. And now, with discounts in place to drive down the initial cost to purchase solutions, there’s no barrier between agencies and continued savings.
